When should you consult a surgeon ?
  • You may be referred to a surgeon by your primary health care provider/ family physician/other consultants.
  • If you have a lump or a swelling anywhere in your body including limbs, torso, breasts, neck, back grain.
  • If you have persistent or sudden acute pain in abdomen.
  • If you are bleeding when passing stools or you are actually constipated.
  • If you have been detected with any condition during your routine health check up that requires a surgeon’s intervention.
  • If you have visible, tortuous veins on leps.
What can you expect from your surgeon?
  • A surgeon will ask you relevant questions about your complaints ,followed by an examination.
  • He or she will then decide a course of management for your condition which may include various blood and radiological tests, medications, admission.
  • The course of management may be conservative or surgical in nature.
  • At the end of your visit with your surgeon, you will know the next steps to be taken for your health.
  • You will/may be called for further consultations.
  • If you are posted for a surgery, your surgeon will proffer a diagnosis or a differential diagnosis; outline your pre and peri-operative care, conduct the surgery, manage you in the immediate and latter post-operative period , right till the time you do not need surgical care anymore. You are likely to be discharged after your immediate post-operative period and will follow-up with your surgeon till you no longer need further surgical treatment for your complaint.
What is conservative management of a surgical problem?
There are several surgical conditions which may require a medical approach i.e. without surgery. This may be a precursor to the surgical management as well. This is known as conservative management.
What Questions should you ask your surgeon ?
  • What is the diagnosis of my condition?
  • What is the best possible treatment plan?
  • What surgery will be performed?
  • How many days of hospital stay will be required?
  • What is the type of surgery? E.g.: elective/emergency/minor/major
  • What are the advantages of the surgery advised.
What is Key-hole surgery?
Key-hole surgery is another term for minimally invasive surgical procedures like laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. In these surgeries, 2-4 small incisions are used instead of long incisions. This results in minimal post-operative pain, early mobilization, better cosmetic scars and minimization of post-operative sequelae of long scars. Today, minimally invasive surgery is the surgical method of choice for intra-abdominal, pelvic and intra-thoracic conditions.
