FAQs
What causes Gastrointestinal diseases?

Viruses (particularly rotavirus) and the bacteria Escherichia coli and Campylobacter species are the primary causes of gastroenteritis. There are, however, many other infectious agents that can cause this syndrome. Non-infectious causes are seen on occasion, but they are less likely than a viral or bacterial cause. Risk of infection is higher in children due to their lack of immunity and relatively poor hygiene.

What are the symptoms of Gastroenteritis?

The main symptom is repeated diarrhoea, which may sometimes contain traces of blood or mucus.
Other symptoms can include:

  • Vomiting
  • Feeling sick
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach cramps
  • Aching limbs
  • Headaches
  • A high temperature (fever)

Symptoms can last anywhere from one to 10 days.

Is gastroenteritis contagious?

The large majority of causes (viral and bacterial) of gastroenteritis are contagious, usually through food or water contamination; in addition, they can be transferred person-to-person. A few causes are not contagious such as food allergies or the side effects of medications. Exposures to body fluids (for example, feces or droplets containing infectious agents) are common sources that transmit the disease to others.

What are some healthy measures to adopt to decrease chances of getting gastroenteritis?

Viral gastroenteritis is easily spread. There are some things you can do to lower your chances of contracting the virus or spreading it to others.

  • Wash your hands often, especially after using the bathroom and before food preparation. If necessary, use hand sanitizer until you can access soap and water.
  • Do not eat raw or undercooked foods.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
  • Take special precautions to avoid contaminated water and food when traveling. Avoid ice cubes and use bottled water whenever possible.
  • There are two vaccines for rotavirus. These are generally started when an infant is two months old.

Ask your doctor if you should have your infant vaccinated.

Our team of experts are here to make your recovery smooth and rapid without compromising on the safety of the patient thereby ensuring you return to your normal life at the earliest.

What are the advantages of endoscopy?
  • No anaesthesia required (In many cases).
  • No cut on body, essentially painless.
  • Minimal preoperative preparation.
  • Safer and cheaper than usual surgery.
  • Helpful for those serious patients who are otherwise unfit for surgery.
How is EUS performed?

A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) is passed through the mouth and into the stomach and duodenum. The tip of the endoscope contains a built in miniature ultrasound probe which emits sound waves. These sound waves pass through the lining of the stomach and duodenum creating a visual image of the pancreas and surrounding tissue. EUS can be used to obtain a needle biopsy of the pancreas or to sample fluid in a pancreatic cyst. This is done by passing a very thin needle from the endoscope into the pancreas under continuous ultrasound monitoring. This technique is called EUS-fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) and does not hurt.
